Once upon a time in Nigeria, blue-chip companies line-up to offer employment to students with good grades. But that have changed over the years. Having the best grade is no longer a guarantee that you will get a very good job or work in a very good company. There are many graduates these days unlike in the past. There are more graduates than available jobs which makes getting a job to becomes challenging.
Recruiters this age spend more time sifting through piles of CVs than interviewing candidates. And it takes a unique CV for you to be considered. Getting an interview invite is just the beginning. You have to be able to sell yourself to get the job.
Here are a few pointers to assist you, whether you are a new job seeker or an employed seeking for a better job, please read on. The more marketable you are the more likely you will get employed.
1. CRAFT A CREATIVE AND IMPRESSIVE RESUME
Your resume is not just a piece of paper, it is you in print. It faces the recruiter before you. It determines if you get called up for an interview or not. That is why you should put everything into it.

2. YOUR NAME IS YOUR BRAND
You are your own brand, so promote your brand. Put your real name on the resume and also let your email beer your names e.g. you can put your full name like email@example.com. If you are married as a woman, maintain a uniform name with the one on your credentials. However, if you have done a change of name let it be reflected.
3. BE THAT PERSON SOUGHT AFTER
Recruiter hardly are looking for candidates they can train, they want people that are already trained. Be sure you apply for jobs that you are qualified for, really you can decide to make a career change but it might not go down well with recruiters. They might think you will not fit in.
4. MANAGE YOUR ONLINE PROFILE
This is the era of the internet and one thing that is associated with it is online presence. It is common place for potential employers to run a check on online activities of would be employees. This is where care is important. Be careful what you share online, maintain a professional profile picture, take down raunchy pictures or videos etc.

5. ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATION
We see job adverts request for additional qualifications as added advantage. If you are a marketer, it is best you get an additional qualification either by becoming member of Marketing Institute or take a paid course. Make sure such qualification is relevant to your field. Make sure you add something new to your resume.
6. BE A VOICE IN YOUR FIELD
Keep abreast of information and discussions in your industry. Contribute in a professional way to industry group on LinkedIn so that you become known by professionals in your field. Start a blog in your chosen field e.g. as an Insurance Expert, I started a blog called INSURANCE.
7. WORK ON YOUR ENTHUSIASM AND SELF ESTEEM
As you meet people or interviewers arm yourself with enthusiasm even if the interview did not go well. Work on your self esteem, let your carriage be top-notch, remember you are a brand – a super brand!

8. FLEXIBILITY IS KEY
Be flexible in terms of job requirement and pay expectation. It is good to be stern, but potential employers want employees that are flexible and not rigid ones.
9. LOOK THE PART
Dress like a pro to any interview. Make sure you get the colours right. If you are in doubt, just go with white shirt and black or navy blue trouser and red/black tie; with those you can never go wrong.
10. IMPROVE YOUR INTERVIEW SKILLS
Practice interview with the help of your friend or partner. This role play will go a long way to boost your self confidence.

11. BE KNOWLEDGEABLE
Like they say, knowledge is power. Acquire the right knowledge that will make you rule your industry. Read newsletters, press releases, news alert and anything that is associated with your industry. It makes you command respect when you release the latest information about industry to interviewers.
It is a common fact that many jobs are not openly advertised. This is because most companies prefer to hire from inside the company or discretely outside. This saves the company money and acts as an excellent screening tool. Always invest time and energy in networking and letting people know you are searching for work. The best way to market yourself is to have a personal reference from within your target company. You can also become a member of your professional association and participate actively in other for you to be able to network with the top leaders in your industry.
13. YES YOU CAN! attitude
Obama used that slogan to win as the first black President in America back in 2009. I think the slogan did part of the job for him, it gave people hope. Recruiters want people with positive attitudes. Keep being positive.
