If you are an MTN subscriber, then you are in luck this post will help you. MTN Backup is a service provided by MTN in a bid to help subscribers protect their contacts. This service allows you to store up to 200 phone contacts on your line and 5,000 plus SIM contacts in their database. The service supports up to 500 mobile phone brands. MTN SIM cards made from year 2010 and above are enabled for this service. SIM cards older than 2010 are to get MTN welcome pack for the new brand of SIM cards so that they too can enjoy the service.
You will recall in my post How to back-up your phone contacts, that I stressed the need for a back-up. In that post I mentioned service providers as one of the methods of backup. This post is basically on one of them – MTN. Contacts are one of your assets as a person, so if you have ever had the scary thought of losing your contacts here is a solution for you.
HOW TO BACKUP YOUR CONTACTS
To start, you need a SIM enabled for MTN Backup or a data-enabled phone. Now let us consider the steps.
Go to menu on your phone and locate ‘MTN Services’ or ‘SIM services.’
Click to select ‘MTN Backup’ then choose Backup ‘SIM contacts.’
Select Yes or Ok from the menu requesting your permission to synchronize your phone book contacts, then wait. After a while the backup of your SIM contacts will be completed and your backup account details sent to your line. Note that your login name usually your phone number and your password will be sent to you.
HOW TO RETRIEVE YOUR CONTACTS
Assuming that after this backup, your phone got missing or SIM destroyed? What are you to do? The following guidelines will answer that question:
Open the MTN Backup site to log in to your account. Click on https://mtnnigeria.weballynis.gmalto.com/CloudBackup/index.html to get to the portal. Log in with your details i.e. your phone number and password (earlier sent) to proceed.
Go to devices and discover where your last backup was done.
Select phone type from the list of phones that matches your current phone to continue
Choose the option ‘Sync now’ and after a short while you will receive a message requesting your permission to proceed
Click continue and hold on while the synchronization progresses.
After the operation has been completed a message will be displayed – “Operation Successful, Thank you.” Your current phone will get updated with your contacts and all other data saved on your old phone.
Select Ok to conclude the process.
You will receive a message from MTN confirming to you that your back-up was successful.
With these few points you will never worry about losing your phone contacts anymore. However, the service is not free, it attracts a charge of N100 automatically deducted from your airtime balance per month. You have to maintain an up-to-date backup regularly as you add more contacts to your phone because the service will only recover up to the point of your last backup and nothing more.
